Word of the Week
Our word for the week is contrition. Last week’s word was absolution, and contrition often precedes it.
Summer Choir
The Summer Choir is back! Join Director of Music Douglas Buchanan and two section leaders at 9am on Sunday mornings to learn a low-stress piece which we will sing during the Offertory. This is a casual opportunity to make friends through music and offer our gifts in the service; it’s fine if you don’t have much experience singing or making music. There’s no audition to join, and you aren’t required to be present every single Sunday. If you’re interested, contact Dr. Doug.
Outreach: Paul’s Place Casserole Ministry
Our Paul’s Place Outreach ministry meets after church on the first Sunday of the month in the kitchen downstairs to make casseroles for the people of Paul’s Place in Washington Village/Pigtown, and there’s also a prep session the day before. It doesn’t take a lot of time, but it makes a big difference to our hungry neighbors.
The next dates are Saturday, June 27th and Sunday, June 28th. To join the Saturday 10am-noon prep session, click here. To join the Sunday assembly session, click here. If you’re interested in volunteering at Paul’s Place, either serving the casseroles or doing something else, several parishioners volunteer there and would love to tell you more about it. Contact Chip or Fr. Todd to connect!
Outreach: Yellow Bags for Hampden Food Pantry
Every month we collect food for the Hampden Food Pantry. Pick up a yellow bag at church (on the tables by the entrances, or under the drop box in the lobby of the office wing), and please return your yellow bag, filled with non-perishable food items, to the church by Sunday the 21st. All non-perishable items are welcome, but the food pantry has given us a list of things they particularly need: cereal, tuna, spaghetti sauce, soup, cake mix, and canned fruits and vegetables. When you see these items or other non-perishables on sale, pick up some extra for the yellow bags!
Outreach: Manna Bags This Sunday
“Manna bags” are filled with snacks, personal hygiene items, and other small necessities that are especially helpful for people experiencing housing insecurity. You can pick up manna bags from the baskets on the tables in both narthexes and keep them in your car or your bag and offer them to folks in need you encounter during the week. Once a month, we make more manna bags to keep those baskets full. Alex Corwell will set up a manna bag-making table at coffee hour after the 10am service this Sunday for anyone who would like to help put them together.
Ordination of the Rev’d Santana Bartoldus
Our new assistant rector the Rev’d Santana Bartoldus, currently a deacon, will be ordained to the priesthood at 11am on Saturday, June 27th at the Cathedral of the Incarnation (University Pkwy at Charles St). We hope many of you will be able to come and support her, and celebrate with her, on this momentous occasion!
Celebrate with the Lyonses and Simons
Violet Lyons and Shai Simon will be baptized at the 10am service on June 28th, and the Lyonses and Simons invite the entire congregation to join them for a light luncheon after the service (in lieu of coffee hour) downstairs in the Great Hall.
St. David’s Folks in the News
Parishioner Alma Bell was featured in the Baltimore Banner’s article on AFRAM; click here to read it. AFRAM happens this weekend in Druid Hill Park; Alma was on the planning committee for the first AFRAM in 1976!
Mtr. Santana’s Contact Info
Mtr. Santana’s email address is up and running. Mtr. Santana, her husband Brian, and their daughter Maggie have moved to Baltimore and have been added to the parish directory. If you’ve never used the parish directory before, it’s very easy to use! Go to the Instant Church Directory website or download the app (the icon is a white silhouette of a church inside a yellow square) onto your phone to create your login. It will connect you to the St. David’s directory by your email address, so create your login with the email address you think we have. If it doesn’t recognize your email address, contact Fr. Todd; either we have a different address or have made a typo! If you want to print out a pdf of the directory, you’ll need to email Fr. Todd for the file and the password; don’t hesitate, he’s happy to send it to you and it only takes a second.
Parish Retreat
The theme of our parish retreat will be “Holy Hospitality,” facilitated by Dr. James Buckley of Loyola University Maryland. There will be time for learning, fellowship and relaxation, and worship led by Bishop Rabb, Fr. Todd, and Mtr. Santana. The retreat will be held Oct 2nd-4th at the Claggett Center, south of Frederick; it’s a very fine space with all rooms en-suite, comfortable gathering spaces, and a beautiful natural setting. The cost is $450 for a single room and $385 (per person) for a double. To register, contact Kelly in the Church Office; make checks payable to St. David’s Church, memo “Retreat.” ~ Bishop Rabb
Notes from the Vestry
The Vestry met on Tuesday, June 16th. Fr. Todd opened the meeting with his Rector’s Report and shared that the Average Sunday Attendance (ASA) as of the 23rd Sunday was 173, up from 158 in 2025. Fr. Todd mentioned that we’ve been seeing a significant number of visitors looking for a church home. Please continue to look out for these folks and welcome them! We have 2 baptisms scheduled for June 28th followed by a luncheon hosted by the baptismal families in the Great Hall. All are invited to attend.
Staff changes in the office are going smoothly as Kelly Buchanan is already off and running in her new role as office secretary. Todd reminded the group that Santana Bartoldus, our new Assistant Rector, will be preaching and celebrating on July 5th.
Treasurer Joe Hovermill reported that YTD we are favorable to budget by almost $70K. Josh Slater from T. Rowe met with the Finance Committee on June 15th to report on the performance of our endowment and other funds they are managing. Like the market for some time, the performance has been strong. Our gains have been tempered by our relatively conservative approach to risk, which is appropriate for a church endowment and how we rely on it.
The Vestry approved the housing allowance submitted by Santana Bartoldus and voted to appoint Gilchrist Hammond as a new trustee on the 50th Anniversary Fund.
Jen Spencer, Junior Warden, reported that the Buildings and Grounds committee continued to discuss pew rearrangement at their last meeting. Pews are being moved back to their original configuration to increase wheelchair access and to prevent columns from blocking pew access on one end. Jen also reported that the ladies’ restroom near the kitchen will be refreshed with a new coat of paint and new ceiling tiles.
The Vestry is not scheduled to meet in July. Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18th. ~ Lloyd Burdette, Senior Warden
Sunday Mornings for Children
Our professionally-staffed Nursery is open from 9am until noon. Your kids can be there throughout the service or you can go down and get them at the offertory so that they can join you for Communion.
We all need a break sometimes. We’ll be broadcasting the 10am service live on the TV in the Great Hall downstairs. If your child needs to let it out, feel free to go down there and take a break and be as loud as you need to be, or run around in circles, and still not miss any of the service!
