Newsletter Week of May 24, 2026

Word of the Week

Our word for the week is Pentecost. Pentecost is Greek for “fiftieth day,” and it comes, big surprise, fifty days after Easter. It’s followed by the season after Pentecost (formerly called Ordinary Time), the longest season in the church year, which lasts until Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas.

Notes from Last Sunday

If you were at the 10am service last Sunday, or if you watched online, you know it was an exciting day. Some of that excitement was planned, and some wasn’t! The gentleman who collapsed during the service spent some time in the hospital that afternoon, but he is now at home, recovering well, and no worse for wear. Thank you all for you patience while we helped him and got him to the hospital and for your prayers for his wellbeing.

Notes for This Sunday

In addition to a baptism at the 10am service, Memorial Day weekend is traditionally when our choir presents a significant portion of a classical Mass setting – this year, Mozart’s Mass in D Major K.194. There will be a string trio accompanying the choir and organ. Dr. Doug assures the rector that the service should be no longer than usual.

Upcoming Staff Transitions

In addition to welcoming our new assistant rector the Rev’d Santana Bartoldus, we have a few other staff transitions coming up.

Jake Elfner, who sings tenor in the choir and was also our office assistant until he got a full-time job in the admissions department at Peabody last fall, will not be returning to the choir this fall. You’ll still see him in the choir stalls occasionally, though, as he will be on our sub list. The choir is singing until May 31st, but that’s the weekend of Jake’s bachelor party, so his final Sunday will be this Sunday, May 24th. Make sure you tell him good luck with all of the exciting changes in his life and that we look forward to seeing him when he subs here!

Beth Sullivan, who sings bass in the choir and is our office assistant, is leaving the office – but staying in the choir (hooray!).

We are restructuring the office staffing. Currently we have a parish administrator (24 hrs/wk) and an office assistant (16 hrs/wk). Beginning in June, we’ll have a parish secretary (24 hrs/wk) to handle the general office tasks (bulletins, building and ministry scheduling, vendors, facilities, etc.) and a controller (24 hrs/wk) to do the financial work of the parish. Kim Carlson will be our controller and Kelly Buchanan, who sings alto in the choir, will be joining the office staff as our parish secretary. This means that we will be able to expand the parish office hours, too; the new hours will be Monday through Thursday, 9am until 3pm. Unofficially, the office will be open much later than 3pm on Mondays through Wednesdays when the clergy are also in the office.

Outreach: Community Dinner at Barclay School

Our Outreach Committee is exploring new partnerships and activities for our congregation to serve our neighbors, and we’re exploring a relationship with the Barclay School, a Title I school near St. David’s. We’re looking for some volunteers to help us serve dinner at the 29th Street Community Center/Barclay School from 6pm to 8:15pm on Tuesday, June 16th. The Outreach Committee will organize the food, but we need helping hands! If you’re interested, contact Susan Larson, Kate Kenny, or Mary Galvin Wilson.

Outreach: Yellow Bags for Hampden Food Pantry

Every month we collect food for the Hampden Food Pantry. Pick up a yellow bag at church (on the tables by the entrances, or under the drop box in the lobby of the office wing), and please return your yellow bag, filled with non-perishable food items, to the church by Sunday the 24th. All non-perishable items are welcome, but the food pantry has given us a list of things they particularly need: cereal, tuna, spaghetti sauce, soup, cake mix, and canned fruits and vegetables. When you see these items or other non-perishables on sale, pick up some extra for the yellow bags!

Save the Date – Santana’s Ordination

Our new assistant rector the Rev’d Santana Bartoldus will be ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, June 27th. We don’t have the final details yet, but it will probably be at the Cathedral of the Incarnation (University Pkwy at Charles St). We’ll let you know the time as soon as we have it, and we hope many of you will be able to come and support her, and celebrate with her, on this momentous occasion.

Congratulations, Graduates!

Lucia Antonio, daughter of Judy Prosper, is graduating from Rivier University (BSN cum laude) and will be moving to Baltimore (happy mom!) to begin her career as a registered nurse at Johns Hopkins.

Helen Burdette, daughter of Lloyd & Tim Burdette, graduated from Eckerd College with a degree in biology in December but walked this spring, and is considering what comes next (and hoping it involves frogs).

Cecilia Collins, daughter of Michael & Tracy Collins, is graduating from Maryvale and heading to the University of Maryland this fall, which, Fr. Todd has pointed out, is close enough that she could come back and serve as crucifer occasionally.

Clare Gocke, daughter of Anne & Christian Gocke, is graduating from Notre Dame Prep and heading to Elon University this fall.

Hudson Short is graduating from the Calvert School and heading to Gilman in the fall.

Gib Smith, daughter of Stuart & Beth Smith, is graduating from UVA with a degree in nursing and, after a summer working in Wyoming, hopes to move to DC in the fall.

Matt Sova completed his PhD in Art History at Johns Hopkins and is on the job market!

Is someone in your household graduating this spring/summer? We’d love to hear about it and share your joy. Email Fr. Todd and let him know who graduated with what from where, and what they’re doing next!

Summer Choir

Starting June 7th, the Summer Choir returns! During the summer, join Director of Music Douglas Buchanan and two section leaders at 9am on Sunday mornings to learn a low-stress piece which we will sing during the Offertory. This is a casual opportunity to make friends through music and offer our gifts in the service; it’s fine if you don’t have much experience singing or making music. There’s no audition to join, and you aren’t required to be present every single Sunday. You can fill out an interest form and availability survey here.

Diocesan Pride

The Baltimore PRIDE Parade is June 13th this year, and the Diocese of Maryland is partnering with Old St. Paul’s downtown to march in the parade. If you’re interested in attending and marching with the Diocese, you can register here and they will send details to you.

Unspeakable Things

Parishioner Brooke (Nevils) Thompson and Katie Curran O’Malley will be at the Ivy Bookshop at 6pm on June 4th to talk about Brooke’s book Unspeakable Things: Silence, Shame, and the Stories We Choose to Believe. This event is a fundraiser for the Women’s Law Center of Maryland, whose mission is to help the women of Maryland by providing legal information, direct legal representation, and legislative advocacy. You can read more about the event by clicking here.

Coffee Hour Hosts Needed

We are looking for volunteers to host coffee hour during the summer. If you’re in town, look and see if there’s a Sunday you can take. To learn more or to volunteer, click here (and thanks!).

Assistance Needed

We have a parishioner with dementia who enjoys coming to church. A family member brings them now, but that family member will be unable to assist for a few weeks this summer and is wondering if anyone might be interested in filling in. The parishioner would need a ride (about a mile from the church) and would have to be accompanied while at church. If you want to learn more, please contact Fr. Todd.

Sunday School for Adults

The Sunday School class for adults meets at 9am in the Great Hall (the room under the church); it’s early for some of you, but we have coffee! The nursery is open during this time for younger kids, and Corky will have supervised play time in the Day School Chapel for older kids (kindergarten and older), so parents, you can drop your kids off and come to class. Teens are welcome in the adult class! You can find all the recordings from the first class to the most recent one here.

Our topic this year is the stories of the Bible. This Sunday, our final Sunday before summer break, we’ll finally enter the Promised Land; if you’re reading along in your Bible, read Joshua chapters 2-6 and 10.

Sunday Mornings for Children

Our professionally-staffed Nursery is open from 9am until noon. Your kids can be there throughout the service or you can go down and get them at the offertory so that they can join you for Communion. If you’re attending the Sunday School for Adults that begins at 9am, you can put younger children in the nursery; older kids (around kindergarten age and older) can go to the Day School Chapel, where our Director of Children and Youth Corky Hovermill will have supervised play time until it’s time for Sunday School or church.

The Sunday School class for children meets at 9:50am in the Day School Chapel ((downstairs on the same level as the Great Hall, in the western wing of the building). Our Director of Children & Youth Ministries, Corky Hovermill, is usually the teacher of this class, with help from volunteers. The children will come up to the church and join us for Communion. We take seriously our temporary custody of your kids, and to help us, we ask parents to please fill out this form.

We all need a break sometimes. We’ll be broadcasting the 10am service live on the TV in the Great Hall downstairs. If your child needs to let it out, feel free to go down there and take a break and be as loud as you need to be, or run around in circles, and still not miss any of the service!
