Newsletter Week of May 31, 2026

Word of the Week

Our word for the week is Trinity — we’re not going to try to explain it over email, so click that link and this one, and then we can talk about it in person over refreshments. The first Sunday after Pentecost, this Sunday, is always Trinity Sunday.

Notes for This Sunday

This Sunday at the 10am service, Bishop Rabb will confirm four adults and receive two others into The Episcopal Church. Join us after for cake and coffee hour celebrating our confirmands! This Sunday is also the final Sunday of Sunday School classes for children before their summer break begins. Sunday School for Adults is already on summer break. All Sunday School classes begin again on the Sunday after Labor Day.

Upcoming Staff Transitions

Kelly Buchanan begins her new position as our parish secretary next week. The parish office number is 410.467.0476 and she will take over the general stdavids address on Wednesday, June 3rd; click here to email her. Her hours next week are a bit different, but beginning the week after, the new parish office hours will be Monday through Thursday, 9am until 3pm. Unofficially, the office will be open much later than 3pm on Mondays through Wednesdays when the clergy are also in the office.

With the addition of Kelly’s position to the office staff, Kim Carlson’s position is changing. From now on, Kim will be our controller, meaning her time will be devoted to finances. She will still be three days a week, probably one of those in the office and the other two remote. We’ll figure out her new schedule in late June, after she helps Kelly get settled. For questions about reimbursements, donations, stock transfers, giving statements, and other financial matters, you can email Kim by clicking here.

Outreach: Paul’s Place Casserole Ministry

Our Paul’s Place Outreach ministry meets after church on the first Sunday of the month in the kitchen downstairs to make casseroles for the people of Paul’s Place in Washington Village/Pigtown, and there’s also a prep session the day before. It doesn’t take a lot of time, but it makes a big difference to our hungry neighbors.

The next dates are Saturday, June 6th and Sunday, June 7th. To join the Saturday 10am-noon prep session, click here. To join the Sunday assembly session, click here. If you’re interested in volunteering at Paul’s Place, either serving the casseroles or doing something else, several parishioners volunteer there and would love to tell you more about it. Contact Chip or Fr. Todd to connect!

Outreach: Community Dinner at Barclay School

Our Outreach Committee is exploring new partnerships and activities for our congregation to serve our neighbors, and we’re exploring a relationship with the Barclay School, a Title I school near St. David’s. We’re looking for some volunteers to help us serve dinner at the 29th Street Community Center/Barclay School from 6pm to 8:15pm on Tuesday, June 16th. The Outreach Committee will organize the food, but we need helping hands! If you’re interested, contact Susan Larson, Kate Kenny, or Mary Galvin Wilson.

Ordination of the Rev’d Santana Bartoldus

Our new assistant rector the Rev’d Santana Bartoldus, currently a deacon, will be ordained to the priesthood at 11am on Saturday, June 27th at the Cathedral of the Incarnation (University Pkwy at Charles St). We hope many of you will be able to come and support her, and celebrate with her, on this momentous occasion!

Notes from the Vestry

The Vestry met on Tuesday, May 19th, the final meeting of the program year. Fr. Todd opened the meeting with his Rector’s Report and shared that the Average Sunday Attendance (ASA) as of the 19th Sunday was 174, up from 162 in 2025. Staff changes were announced and subsequently published in the enews: Kelly Buchanan will start as Parish Secretary the first week of June, and Kim Carlson will shift to Controller. Santana Bartoldus, our new Assistant Rector, will be preaching and celebrating on July 5th. We have 3 baptisms scheduled for this summer as well as 4 confirmations and 2 receptions scheduled for Sunday, May 31st. May 31st will also be the last day of children’s Sunday School.

Junior Warden Jen Spencer updated the Vestry on Buildings and Grounds and Day School developments. 2 of the 4 offices are being painted and reorganized in anticipation of our Assistant Rector’s arrival. At their quarterly meeting, the B&G Committee discussed pew rearrangement, as some pews are blocked by columns. The goal is to have pews in the nave reorganized by the end of the summer. Jen also reported that, this fall, the Day School will extend its program day to 5pm to be consistent with other schools in the area. The Day School will also introduce a “Hatchling” program for young 2-year-olds, and Spanish language instruction will be included for all grades. ~ Lloyd Burdette, Senior Warden

Save the Date – Parish Retreat

Save the date for our parish retreat, October 2nd-4th this year! This is our second parish retreat and our theme will be “Holy Hospitality,” facilitated by Dr. James Buckley of Loyola University Maryland. The retreat will be held at the Claggett Center, south of Frederick; it’s a very fine space with all rooms en-suite, comfortable gathering spaces, and a beautiful natural setting. There will be time for learning, fellowship and relaxation. Fr. Todd, Lloyd Burdette, Liz Insley, and Bishop John and Sharon Rabb are the team planning the retreat with Dr. Buckley. Look for more information soon on registration, cost, and other details. It will be a wonderful time to connect, discover, and relax! ~ Bishop Rabb

Congratulations, Graduates!

Lucia Antonio, daughter of Judy Prosper, graduated from Rivier University (BSN cum laude) and is moving to Baltimore (happy mom!) to begin her career as a registered nurse at Johns Hopkins.

Helen Burdette, daughter of Lloyd & Tim Burdette, graduated from Eckerd College with a degree in biology in December but walked this spring, and is considering what comes next (and hoping it involves frogs).

Cecilia Collins, daughter of Michael & Tracy Collins, is graduating from Maryvale and heading to the University of Maryland this fall, which, Fr. Todd has pointed out, is close enough that she could come back and serve as crucifer occasionally.

Clare Gocke, daughter of Anne & Christian Gocke, is graduating from Notre Dame Prep and heading to Elon University this fall.

Josh Peters, son of Suzanne Hurst & Sam Peters, graduated from UVA with a BS in statistics and a BA in economics; in July, he will move to DC for a job with a government contracts company managing supply chains.

Caroline Rice, daughter of Elizabeth & Ken Rice, graduated from Wake Forest with a business degree and is moving to sunny Scottsdale, Arizona to work for General Mills.

Hudson Short is graduating from the Calvert School and heading to Gilman in the fall.

Gib Smith, daughter of Stuart & Beth Smith, graduated from UVA with a degree in nursing and, after a summer working in Wyoming, hopes to move to DC in the fall.

Matt Sova completed his PhD in Art History at Johns Hopkins and is on the job market!

Is someone in your household graduating this spring/summer? We’d love to hear about it and share your joy. Email Fr. Todd and let him know who graduated with what from where, and what they’re doing next!

Rest in Peace

Joyce Pritt, mother of Terry Pritt, died last Saturday; the funeral was in West Virginia on Wednesday.

Doug Welsh, brother of Lori Martinet, died on Monday; the funeral will be held in New Jersey later this month.

Summer Choir

Starting June 7th, the Summer Choir returns! During the summer, join Director of Music Douglas Buchanan and two section leaders at 9am on Sunday mornings to learn a low-stress piece which we will sing during the Offertory. This is a casual opportunity to make friends through music and offer our gifts in the service; it’s fine if you don’t have much experience singing or making music. There’s no audition to join, and you aren’t required to be present every single Sunday. You can fill out an interest form and availability survey here.

Diocesan Pride

The Baltimore PRIDE Parade is June 13th this year, and the Diocese of Maryland is partnering with Old St. Paul’s downtown to march in the parade. If you’re interested in attending and marching with the Diocese, you can register here and they will send details to you.

Unspeakable Things

Parishioner Brooke (Nevils) Thompson and Katie Curran O’Malley will be at the Ivy Bookshop at 6pm on June 4th to talk about Brooke’s book Unspeakable Things: Silence, Shame, and the Stories We Choose to Believe. This event is a fundraiser for the Women’s Law Center of Maryland, whose mission is to help the women of Maryland by providing legal information, direct legal representation, and legislative advocacy. You can read more about the event by clicking here.

Coffee Hour Hosts Needed

We are looking for volunteers to host coffee hour during the summer. If you’re in town, look and see if there’s a Sunday you can take. To learn more or to volunteer, click here (and thanks!).

Assistance Needed

We have a parishioner with dementia who enjoys coming to church. A family member brings them now, but that family member will be unable to assist for a few weeks this summer and is wondering if anyone might be interested in filling in. The parishioner would need a ride (about a mile from the church) and would have to be accompanied while at church. If you want to learn more, please contact Fr. Todd.

Sunday School for Adults

The Sunday School class for adults is on summer break; we’ll be back on the Sunday after Labor Day, and until then, if you missed classes this past program year, you can catch up by watching recordings here.

Sunday Mornings for Children

Our professionally-staffed Nursery is open from 9am until noon. Your kids can be there throughout the service or you can go down and get them at the offertory so that they can join you for Communion. If you’re attending the Sunday School for Adults that begins at 9am, you can put younger children in the nursery; older kids (around kindergarten age and older) can go to the Day School Chapel, where our Director of Children and Youth Corky Hovermill will have supervised play time until it’s time for Sunday School or church.

The Sunday School class for children meets at 9:50am in the Day School Chapel ((downstairs on the same level as the Great Hall, in the western wing of the building). Our Director of Children & Youth Ministries, Corky Hovermill, is usually the teacher of this class, with help from volunteers. The children will come up to the church and join us for Communion. We take seriously our temporary custody of your kids, and to help us, we ask parents to please fill out this form.

We all need a break sometimes. We’ll be broadcasting the 10am service live on the TV in the Great Hall downstairs. If your child needs to let it out, feel free to go down there and take a break and be as loud as you need to be, or run around in circles, and still not miss any of the service!

Please Pray For:

Tanya, Patricia, Tom, Jim, Corky, Coleman, Tod, Carey, Kathleen, Darlene, Robert, Leila, Amy, Meg, Manish, Betsy, John, Linda, Barbara, Eleanor K., Judy, Randy, Miriam, Peter, Dockery, Anne, David, Allie, Dianna, Tracy, Lee, Will, Allen, Nathaniel, Penny, Elizabeth, Anne, Mike, Patricia Ann, Russell, Deborah, Betsy, Braeden.
